We have to portray the townsfolk as a Greek chorus: that is to say, depersonalized in the utmost, a many-headed hivemind. Not a collection of individuals but a mass, devoid of color and personality. Soulless.
[from the game’s design documents]

"Extra" townsfolk that are found throughout the Town-on-Gorkhon. Interacting with these characters is vital to the success and health of the player, as they offer necessary items and services for survival. They can usually be found wandering the town or inside of houses.

Note that should the player's Reputation drop low enough, many townsfolk will deny their services — or attack on sight.

Townsfolk

Men

Crows, Nightjars, and Pigeons trade for the same items and provide the same services. Nightjars and Pigeons share the same model with the exception of the moustache present on Nightjars.

Infected versions of townsfolk can be traded with for valuables and food in exchange for medicines and Tinctures. They will always trade with the player regardless of reputation.

Painkiller and antibiotic tincture values differ based on which organ was used to make it, with blood being the least valuable and brain being the most valuable based on the following order: blood < kidney < liver < heart < brain.

Hostile

These townsfolk are immediately hostile to the player and killing them will increase reputation, with the exception of Arsonists.

Arsonists will not attack the player unless the player is infected with the Plague or if the player attacks them. Killing arsonists does not cause reputation to increase or decrease.

Other

Militia are found wandering around the districts and will attack the player if their reputation is at the lowest ("You're Hated Here"). They will also be stationed at the entrances to infected districts and can be found in houses in burned districts. They are variants of the Crow, Nightjar, Ouzel, and Pigeon NPCs wearing guard caps.

Army Soldiers and Flamethrowers replace Militia once the Army arrives, although Militia can still be found in houses in burned districts. Army Flamethrowers are only found in infected districts.

Notes

  • Trading with a Teensy is the only way to find Shmowders outside of quests and looting infected houses.
  • Children cannot be killed, except for Boys.
  • Children and women - except for Boys - can become frightened by enemy townsfolk, the player taking out their weapon, or the player attacking townsfolk and will run away. Boys and men will become aggressive and attack the player if the player attacks innocent townsfolk.
  • When breaking into houses in healthy districts, you can trade with and ask for repairs from the people inside as long as you don't take out your weapon or get caught looting a container. When getting caught, Men and Boys will attack, but you will not lose reputation as long as you dont attack them.
  • Flamethrowers' fire can reduce your infection and even cure it completely, but Arsonists' fire cannot.
