Rations are the msot important items in Pathologic 2 as they are necessities for survival. Most, if not all, food and drink items can be purchased in Groceries for either money or coupons, or bartered with townsfolk.

Rations

Item	Description & Details	Effect
Apple	Not too fresh, but still able to satisfy a little hunger and thirst. Each seed might one day become a tree, its roots permeating Earth.	Decreases a very small amount of thirst and hunger.
Army Ration	Filling. Soldiers take these to the front so that their death comes from a bullet rather than starvation. General Block never wanted to come to this town, but it's a soldier's duty to follow orders… Isn't it?	Decreases hunger.
Bread	Bread is the heart of life. It's very filling. Never throw bread on the ground. If you're full, give it to a friend. No friends? Give it to an enemy. Hell, give it to a dog. Just don't waste it.	Decreases hunger immensely and increases thirst.
Canned Food	Filling, although I'm not sure what kind of food is inside. Before I returned to the Town, I grabbed a whole sack of canned food. Survived on it for almost a week. I can hardly stand the smell now.	Decreases hunger.
Coffee	Coffee beans will immediately energize you, but it's very unhealthy . You can forgo sleep with coffee - for a week or more, if need be, but it's a bad idea. Whoever refuses dreams dares fate to pass them over.	Decreases exhaustion and health and increases hunger.
Egg	Nothing like a good egg. Delicious. The chicken has yet to be seen. People mostly eat unfertilized eggs. This is an empty illusion of possible life.	Decreases hunger but increases thirst.
Fish	Fresh fish. Filling, but it makes your throat feel dry. The lateral line is called that for a reason: every fish sees its Lines unfold in a stream of possibilities. Sometimes, that Line is a a fishing line.	Decreases hunger and increases thirst.
Fresh Meat	Every path in the world leads to meat. Nothing is more filling. The human world is a world of meat. The spirit is nothing more than twitching, trembling meat. Whoever denies meat will become extinct.	Greatly decreases hunger and increases thirst.
Kashk	A dry, fermented dairy product. Salty. When herding cows and bulls in the steppe, odonghs often live on water and kashk for months at a time. Nothing fancy, but it's nourishing.	Decreases hunger but increases thirst.
Lemon	Eating a lot of lemons is bad for your teeth. They won't make you less hungry, but they're certainly an invigorating fruit. When life gives you lemons...	Decreases a small amount of exhaustion.
Milk	Warm, creamy. Satisfies hunger and thirst. Reminds me of childhood. Often used as an offering to the dead, milk serves as a reminder that all that is born must come to an end. It is said that the dead drink milk over water because the flow of water reminds them of the flow of time.	Decreases hunger and thirst.
Muddy Water	Quenches thirst somewhat, but is it worth the side effects? And you can't craft tinctures with it. Why did I collect it?	Decreases thirst and increases infection.
Pemmican	A mixture of meat, fruit, and fat. Extremely filling, only slightly revolting. Pemmican isn't eaten for pleasure. This form preserves meat and fat, so that's how odonghs prepare it before venturing into the steppe for weeks to herd bulls.	Decreases hunger but increases thirst.
Rotten Food	Satisfied a little hunger, but is it worth the risk? Meat? Bread? Vegetables? Plague makes everyone–and–everything equal.	Decreases hunger and increases infection.
Smoked Fish	Salty. Spicy. Smells delicious, never spoils, and causes ravaging thirst. Once, we tried to tease Lara by calling her "Proud Trout." Instead of becoming offended, she said she respects fish for their calm and focus.	Decreases hunger and increases thirst.
Smoked Meat	Not as good as fresh meat, but better preserved. Tear it apart with your teeth; no forks or knives required. Canned meat. Jerked meat. Smoked meat. Boiled meat. Beef, ham. The art of cooking meat is truly honored in the Town.	Decreases hunger and increases thirst.
Tan	A tasty dairy drink. Satisfies hunger, quenches thirst. The Kin once told me the best tan is made during thunderstorms, or by swearing at the milk as harsh as you can. I tried every cuss in the book, but never learned the art very well.	Decreases hunger and thirst.
Toast	Soldier food. It's better to eat fresh bread. Stale bread is bad news. It doesn't breathe.	Decreases hunger but greatly increases thirst.
Water Bottle	Quenches thirst. Despite the town standing on the river Gorkhon, fresh drinking water is a rare commodity here. Water is brought to the town daily from a spring in the steppe and distributed among the households by water-bearers. The Gorkhon water was proven to be clean, but the locals refuse to drink it.	Decreases thirst.

Snacks

Chestnuts	There are no chestnut trees around, yet chestnuts are pervasive. Truly a town of mysteries. The game goes like this: find a nut that has traveled far, guess its name, shake it, and listen to stories from the soul trapped inside. This originated with the Polyhedron. We didn't play it as kids.	Can be consumed to decrease hunger slightly or traded with children.
Hazelnuts	Can be munched down—with little effect. The kids here would sell their souls for a handful. The game goes like this: find a nut that has traveled far, guess its name, shake it, and listen to stories from the soul trapped inside. This originated with the Polyhedron. We didn't play it as kids.	Can be consumed to decrease hunger slightly or traded with children.
Peanuts	Nuts can be munched down, but they do little to sate hunger. Why then do the local kids' eyes light up when they see one? Used in the most popular game among local children, nuts are forbidden in the Polyhedron, where most of the kids fled from the plague. The "voices of nuts" were said to make the facets of the Polyhedron resonate in a bad way.	Can be consumed to decrease hunger slightly or traded with children.
Raisins	Once a juicy grape, now a small sweet that wouldn't satisfy an infant. If a train is late, first we run out of cookies, then chocolate, then candy. Only after that do children remember raisins.	Can be used in bartering or consuming to decrease hunger very slightly.

The listed items are food and rations obtainable throughout Pathologic: The Marble Nest. that impact hunger and thirst. Food is only purchasable through trade with Shrew, Sticky, or the Shop.

Rations

Item	Description & Details	Effect
Bread	Bread is the stuff of life. No food is more filling. Anything that's baked of dough can be called bread. The local variety is greyish in color and crumbly to the touch, making one doubt if it was actually made from grain. Surprisingly delicious though.	Decreases hunger immensely and increases thirst.
Canned Food	This can is completely airproof, guaranteeing that its contents are uninfected. The food itself is nutritious. Nutritious, neatly-packed and well-preserved food that somehow doesn't require a can opener. There's no manufacturer brand on the can and it's far from obvious what type of food is inside.	Decreases hunger.
Cracker	Soldier food. There's no reason to prefer it to freshly baked bread. Leaving bread to go stale or dry is heavily frowned upon. Crackers arrived to the town with soldiers' rations and remain unpopular despite being decently filling.	Decreases hunger but slightly increases thirst.
Milk	Oddly warm and creamy, as though milked minutes ago, this common nourishing drink can often be found as an offering at cemeteries. Often used as an offering to the dead, milk serves as a remind that all that is born must come to an end. It's so popular in the town that cream separators can be found even in the households that seemingly have nothing to do with the local Bull Project.	Reduces hunger and thirst.
Raisins	Formerly juicy berries, currently a luxurious treat that leaves one's mouth sugary when eaten. A luxurious imported treat. The locals refuse to eat more than a couple at a time; perhaps this has to do with the fact that raisins do not spoil and thus become the only treat available during food shortages.	Slightly reduces hunger.

"Rations" is the fourth of five tabs in the player's inventory. Rations can have a variety of effects: increasing or decreasing hunger, increasing or decreasing exhaustion, and/or decreasing health. Rations can be bought at Stores or obtained by trading with Patrolmen. Water can be traded to Carousers for bandages and tourniquets. Nuts are a special type of ration that may be traded to children for items in addition to decreasing hunger if eaten.

Rations

Item	Description & Details	Effect
Bread	A piece of stale bread. Hard as rock, but no signs of mould. Unlikely to be dangerous, but rumour has it that it can be.	Decreases hunger by 24%.
Coffee	Has a strong effect on the heart and blood vessels which this environment makes even more harmful. On the other hand, coffee decreases fatigue, making it essential during emergencies.	Decreases health by 5% and fatigue by 20%.
Cracker	A piece of dried bread. Not very nutritious, but can be stored for a long time. The town doesn't have a bakery. The townsfolk bake their own bread, while the dwellers of the Termitary make unleavened cakes. Lately there hasn't been any fresh bread because of flour shortages.	Decreases hunger by 2%.
Dried fish	The river has provided quite a few unpleasant surprises recently. Could this indicate a mass dying off of fish? Hundreds of dead fish have washed up during the past week, the banks are covered in scales. This has made the people wary of eating fresh fish and they now prefer preserved fish like this one.	Decreases hunger by 16%.
Dried meat	This meat was cooked three weeks ago. The risk of it being infected is negligible, but it is still the meat of a Steppe animal... Large shipments of dried meat have been prepared for transportation to the regional center and await the arrival of the freight train at the Beef Warehouses.	Decreases hunger by 13%.
Egg	A fresh quail egg. Very nutritious. Especially good for an organism weakened by a serious disease. Chickens and chicken eggs are becoming rare nowadays, so the townspeople are eating quail eggs.	Decreases hunger by 12%.
Fresh fish	This fish was caught today or yesterday. This indicates there is still live fish in the river, which inspires hope. Contains a lot of phosphorous and other useful nutrients. Some believe that consumption of fish stimulates the brain significantly.	Decreases hunger by 25%.
Fresh meat	The meat of an animal slaughtered hours ago. The situation in the Abbatoir is unknown, its innards are closed off to common people, and any contact with the Termitary is temporarily cut off. In any case, fresh meat is nutritious and tasty if properly cooked.	Decreases hunger by 25%.
Lemon	Citrus medica, a common lemon. They're shipped to the region via the South-Western Railroad. A highly valuable fruit. Provides a rich supply of vitamins and reduces fatigue, but increases hunger. Increases immunity by a negligible amount. Lemons are considered a rarity in the region.	Increases hunger by 10% and decreases exhaustion by 10%.
Milk	A bottle of cow's milk. Be careful with this product. Milk is very good for one's health but its origin means there is always a big risk. Women say that recently cows have been producing a clear ichor, and dark clots have been found in steamed milk. Farm animals cannot be trusted these days.	Decreases hunger by 7%.
Smoked meat	This meat was cooked a month ago. Very nutritious and filling. Is very popular among townsfolk and thus relatively hard to come by nowadays.	Decreases hunger by 13%.
Vegetables	Preserved vegetables. The jars are, as you can see, not labelled. At the warehouses the jars were packed together in crates, preventing a mixup. But this is stolen goods. This jar could contain tomatoes, young onion bulbs, peppers, or beans. All are good for one's health in different measure.	Decreases hunger by 12%.
Water Bottle	A bottle of spring water from one of the hidden springs—the Cathedral's Stone spring; the Spin-a-Yarn Square well, or the Sugagh Khadugh spring on the boundary between the Steppe and the Rotten Field. The water from the latter used to be sacred, but the locals are wary about drinking it due to its proximity to burial grounds.	Decreases hunger by 1% and increases exhaustion by 3%.

Snacks

Hazelnut	A tree nut. These nuts don't grow in our region, but are often found in the town because of the children's favourite game of nuts. It's rumoured that there used to be a large stockpile of tree nuts in Warehouse 11 and Notkin's friends made off with four sacks. Can never be infected.	Decreases hunger by 1%.
Peanut	An earth-nut. Occupies the lowest tier in the hierarchy of the children's game of nuts. It has little value because of its fragile shell and awkward shape. However, it is often found in food stockpiles and has some nutritional value. Can never be infected.	Decreases hunger by 1%.
Walnut	A rare nut for this area. Knowing the children's love for large nuts, the adults would use it as a reward. Now walnuts have become something akin to a currency among children. Once could exchange a large walnut for something valuable. Can never be infected.	Decreases hunger by 1%.
