Grace is the current caretaker of the cemetery, after the death of her father.

Description

Grace is a pale and bleary-eyed little girl. She cares immensely for the dead as she is able to hear their voices even after their burial. She sings songs and recites poetry to the deceased to soothe their souls, claiming that there is no faction more helpless nor lonelier than the dead. Since she has lived in the cemetery her entire life, she has a sense of apathy towards the concept of death.

Background

Grace was born to a mother and a father addicted to twyrine. They never bothered to name her or give her the appropriate documentation and so she took the nickname "Grace".[1] Following the death of her father 3 years ago[2], Grace took over the cemetery and became the new caretaker. She cannot read or write and she lives in the Cemetery by eating whatever she picks up off the ground, living like a weed. As one of the children on Isidor Burakh's list she was often invited to learn from him.

Plot

Haruspex Route

My path was called "The Burden of the Living." I… I just wanted to care for those leaving us behind.



As the Caretaker of the Cemetery Grace was the overseer for Isidor Burakh's funeral. After the Earth rejects Isidor's body she refuses to allow him to be cremated instead, insisting that it is forbidden as it destroys any hope of consoling them. She insists that there must be another way to allow Isidor to be buried. Ultimately she has no final say over what the Haruspex chooses to do with his father's body.

Following Isidor's funeral Grace attempts to contact his spirit. The effort of doing so pains her immensely, so much so that some worry that doing so might kill her. Murky in particular berates her for choosing an ineffective and dangerous method of speaking to the dead. If asked by the Haruspex Grace will call upon Isidor's spirit, allowing his son to hear some of his final words.

Grace can be spoken to about her place on Isidor Burakh's List. She directs the Haruspex to Capella, who the children have placed as their leader.

Following the outbreak of the Sand Plague bodies will begin to pile up in the Cemetery faster than they can be buried. Grace, who has become overwhelmed by the number of new dead created by the plague, is coming apart at the seams. She begs the Haruspex not to touch the dead, as there is no one more cold and lonely than them. Grace temporarily allows the Haruspex to speak to the dead, should he wish to listen. The Haruspex may choose to disregard Grace's pleas and burn the dead and secure her safety at the cost of their spirit's. He may also speak to the Rat Prophet outside of the Lodge, who will dispose of the spirits in mysterious ways, or he may choose to listen to Grace and do nothing to the bodies. Regardless of the choice Dora Feugel will appear in the Lodge, telling the Haruspex that the Town has found a place for Grace to live. If Grace was removed from the Cemetery she will be placed in Peter Stamatin's Loft alongside Peter Stamatin. Though an initially strange pairing the two grow incredibly close. If the situation at the Cemetery is not seen and resolved by the Haruspex at all Grace will die the following day.

On the tenth day Grace will become infected with the Sand Plague. If she is living with Peter Stamatin she begs the Haruspex to take him far away from her as she fears she will infect him too.

In the Diurnal Ending, Grace will be adopted by Katerina and Alexander Saburov. If the player has completed the side quest regarding her adoption by Peter Stamatin, she will still reference visiting him to keep him company.

Following the Nocturnal Ending, Grace will not leave the Town, despite not being part of the Kin (as well as Murky and Sticky). Instead, she will become the Mistress of the Dead, serving her purpose alongside Taya Tycheek and Changeling.

Pathologic: The Marble Nest

An underaged girl used to be in charge of the funerals. Small wonder everything went to hell.



Grace died prior to the events of The Marble Nest.

  • If the Haruspex assists Dora Feugel in the Cemetery, Grace can be adopted by Peter Stamatin. She claims that she can understand how hurt his heart is, and wishes to take care of him just as much as he takes care of her.
  • If Peter is deceased, Grace will still be in his apartment, claiming to hear his spirit and wishes to care for it.
  • Grace will be immune to the Plague if she is in the Cemetery. Moving into Peter Stamatin's Loft makes her susceptible to disease.
  • One of the concepts that did not make it into the full release of Pathologic 2 was the ability to talk to deceased NPCs. Every such "spiritual seance" would have exhausted Grace, draining her of her life and ultimately killing her if pushed her too hard. The remaining evidence of this mechanic exists in the side quest in the completed game where Grace allows the Haruspex to speak with Isidor Burakh. [3]
  • Her Russian name—"Ласка"—means both "weasel" and "tenderness"; however, the animal allusion wasn't intensional. [4]

Description

Appearance: A tall girl with shaggy hair of ash grey. She’s got long arms and legs, round protrusive shoulders. She inhales deeply and pants, as if she’s swallowing air or trying to hide sobbing. Her breath is amazingly fresh, it seems to have a sweet flavor, which is eerie considering Grace's occupation. Her chest heaves all the time. Grace’s voice is deep, sonorous, but not too loud either.

Pose: Standing, with her hands wrung and pressed to her chest.

Personality: Grace is totally deranged. She deals with the dead more than with the living. She’s been attending graves ever since her early childhood, which, of course, affected her psyche. Grace serves as a guardian spirit to the local Cemetery much like Mother Superior to the Termitary. She talks to the dead a lot, occasionally she sits beside a grave and sings. At night, she makes the rounds of the graveyard, brings gifts to the dead, strange tokens at times: a typewriter carriage or birthday cake with candles.
Grace has an ear for music but doesn’t play any musical instruments. She sings mesmerizingly, but her voice breaks as if she’s struggling to breathe. She feels the consequences of disease like no one else does. To Grace the relationship with the world of the dead is so volatile, that she isn’t bothered much by the dead seeping into the world of the living; it’s something scary, but reasonable.

Since early childhood, she's talked to the dead more than the living. This greatly impacted her psyche, with many citizens believing that she cares more for the deceased than those who are alive. However, Capella claims that Grace is just lonely. She has been addicted to twyrine since she was young and shows a great reliance on the substance.

She speaks to the graves constantly, sitting around them and singing songs. Grace is musical, but does not play any instrument—she sings beautifully but haltingly. When night falls, she brings the dead gifts that they enjoy: flowers, typewriters, or even cakes.[2] Since she has lived in the cemetery her entire life, she has a sense of apathy towards the concept of death. She even views the outbreak of the Plague with disinterest, only planning on how to best plan new graves.

Background

Since childhood, Grace has been accustomed to two things: the dead and twyrine. Her father, a cemetery caretaker, watered the graves with milk and sugar, while her mother swept the gravestones with her hair. Grace's father abused twyrine, forcing both his wife and young daughter to also drink. It is said that this led to his death, and to the current state of his daughter.[3]

As Grace has been accustomed to caring for the graves since she was young, she chose to continue her father's work after he passed on.

Bachelor Route

On Day 2, the Bachelor is directed to the Cemetery to speak with Grace at Sticky's urging. She will explain more about what a Shabnak-Adyr is and gives him a Lockpick.

On Day 3, while visiting the Cemetery, the Bachelor may speak to Grace and take a Shmowder from her, or refuse and gain a reputation increase.

On Day 6, while looking for the Changeling, the Bachelor will be sent by Katerina Saburova to speak to Grace at the Cemetery. Missing Expand.


On Day 12, as Grace is one of the Haruspex's Bound, there is a chance that an Executor will be stationed inside of the Cemetery in front of Grace's Lodge, with Grace being infected inside. If the player wishes for the Haruspex to attend the Cathedral meeting, they must give Grace a Shmowder or a Panacea to cure her.

Haruspex Route

On Day 1, an injured man - a man the Haruspex himself wounded - can be found in Grace's Lodge in the Cemetery. Grace asks the Haruspex to save the man through a blood transfusion. To save the man, the Haruspex will need to have his blood drawn by Var in the Atrium so that a blood transfusion can be performed.

On Day 10, if the Haruspex chooses to investigate the occurrence at the Bone Stake Lot, he will have to talk to Grace at the Cemetery about what to do with the auroch. However, when he arrives at the Cemetery, he will find that Grace has gone missing and another girl is inside of Grace's Lodge as Grace has been captured by the Army. After rescuing Grace from the army, she will return to her lodge in the Cemetery.

Following the "Termite Ending", Capella states that Grace will become one of the rulers of the town, continuing to manage the burial of the dead. She will help Capella "close the lines in the circle". She will become known as the Beige Mistress.

Changeling Route

On Day 1, after Changeling wakes up in the Cemetery after experiencing a strange dream she can find Grace alongside Katerina Saburova inside of Grace's Lodge. Missing Expand.


On Day 2, Katerina Saburova will request that the Changeling convince Grace to change to the beliefs of the Humbles. The Changeling brings a Flower, a loaf of Bread, and a bottle of Milk to the Cemetery as gifts for Grace. While speaking to Grace the Changeling learns that Grace knows there is to be a plague, one she believes is the result of transgressions against an unknown higher power - a theory Katerina also shares.

On Day 5, Grace will give the Changeling more details on when and where she can meet someone who is said to be her best friend.

On Day 6, the Changeling receives a letter from the Albino who says he must leave the Town. Distressed, the Changeling seeks out Grace for advice. Missing Expand.

The Keeper of the Cemetary

The position of the Keeper of the Cemetery has been passed on for over three generations now, however there is no information as for its being caste or ritual. Since the foundation of the stone city, the cemetery was kept by quite a number of people and among them there were not only ones from the steppe. Our contemporary keeper is actually of the late settlers, so it would be foolish to attempt explaining the strange behavior of the keepers by attributing it to their being members of the local death cult. In fact, people of the steppe don't actually have a fully developed death cult; it is in some way integrated into the complicated cult of the earth. The inhabitants of the steppe are afraid of their dead and take them for filth. The custom of burying the dead by means of putting them inside the earth they think for barbarism and only the chosen ones, the most revered of their people are allowed to be buried in this way. Moreover, occasions of such "filthy" burial are accompanied by numerous rituals of cleansing.

Some primitive peoples look upon their dead just as if they were living. Their mythology didn't create a world where the dead could live or await the meeting with the living. Not having the ability to preserve the voices and feelings of the dead and not believing in the forthcoming meeting with the beloved ancestors, these peoples try to save the bones of their dead and give them the attributes of the person. In this way they create an illusion of the person’s presence in everyday life. Our steppe people are not of this kind.

I presume that the strange care and warmth with which our keeper treats the dead has nothing to do with ritual or tradition. The desire to care for the dead, to comfort them in the way he does it, comes from the depth of the human soul. The keeper treats the dead in this way because he sees no alternative. It is barely possible that he loves the dead, but I’m sure he feels them too well to treat them with indifference.

I think that the reason for such whole-hearted attention to the dead comes from exceeding usage of twyrin and smoking the resinous roots of saviur. There is no other explanation because the keeper is no madman, in fact, he is quite a sensible person. Twyrin sharpened his senses. By exceeding the allowed dosage of twyrin, living in a scarcely populated area of the town, among the wide variety of herbs, the keeper learnt of the torment of the dead too many things that mortal men aren't allowed to know. He can feel the awful, hopeless pain of the dead with his skin, his nerves, and therefore, he tries to ease it by feeding them sugar and pouring warm milk on the graves. I think that their pain spread on him shocked the man. He tries to ease his own pain by drinking more twyrin, but his senses sharpen even more and the torment becomes overwhelming.

He brought up his daughter, Grace, in this way. First, he made his wife drink as much twyrin, then did the same to her. The baneful influence of the herbs had an effect on his family members. Their ears are extremely sensitive and the hairs on their skin seem to move in response to any stirring on the cemetery land. His wife used to be a pretty woman in her youth, but later turned into something that looked like a creature from the other side. By the time her hair went gray, she had grown it to be so dense and heavy, as to conceal her whole body. If one were to look at her from behind, her hair reached the ground and fell lower than her waist from the front. Her nails became stone-hard and the skin on her hands became dry and wrinkly because of the constant digging that she was up to.

Obviously, the family cannot treat the dead for anything other than their relatives, perhaps immobile, but present at all times. The three live and sleep almost hugging the dead. The earth, full of buried people lulls them on its dented hand; at night, when the silent aura of the town isn’t broken by any foreign sounds, they press their ears against their rough beds, their blood full of the hallucinating twyrin, and listen to the sounds of the earth; stars shed their cold light from above upon them, staring indifferently at the three. The dead are everywhere around them, their tormented screams and groans louder and louder. Sometimes, having just buried a man in the morning, by the time dusk sets in, they hear the stirring and discomfort of the new neighbor.

Being able to hear the speech of the dead and feel their pain, the keeper can no longer forget about his ward. He cares about them because feels with every molecule of his body that their existence is not over. Perhaps he no longer thinks that this care is utmost necessity, but takes it for an unpleasant, but essential duty.[4]
